Map sources and selection method
The 19 highlighted states are the owner-confirmed design-partner operating footprint. The county dots are illustrative geographic reference points. They are not customer locations, project counts, or evidence of legal or regulatory coverage.
Which counties are shown?
Each highlighted state has three county or parish points. We ranked the
counties within each state by total population in the 2020 Census, using
the POP_COU field in the Census Bureau's
2020_UA_COUNTY worksheet. The workbook's field-description
sheet defines this as total county population. We did not rank urban
population or add urban-area overlaps.
Virginia independent cities are excluded. Fairfax County is separate from Fairfax city. Louisiana uses parishes. Denver County and Davidson County are included as actual counties despite consolidated city-county governments; Nashville-Davidson's balance place is not used.
Population and point coordinates
- U.S. Census Bureau, County-level Urban and Rural information for the 2020 Census, September 2023 update. Original workbook. Only the total population field is used.
- U.S. Census Bureau, 2020 National Counties Gazetteer. Local original ZIP. County names and five-digit GEOIDs are joined to representative latitude and longitude coordinates by GEOID.
- Ranking was independently cross-checked against the Census Bureau's Vintage 2021 county dataset, using its April 2020 base, not later population estimates.
Representative coordinates identify a point within a geographic area. They are not customer addresses or necessarily county seats. The 57-point dataset includes each county's name, state, GEOID, 2020 population, source coordinates, and projected position. The source-field extract retains all 1,505 county and county-equivalent records in the 19 states so the ranking can be checked.
Boundary geometry and projection
Boundaries come from US Atlas 3.0.1, distributed under the ISC license. The local unmodified topology is based on the Census Bureau's simplified 2017 state boundaries. This is a geographic illustration, not a cadastral or legal-boundary map.
The map uses Albers USA at scale 1300 and translation [487.5, 305], with Alaska and Hawaii insets in a 975 × 610 view. County coordinates are converted with the same projection at build time using d3-geo 3.1.1. The page makes no external map requests and loads no mapping library. Its static map is a local SVG image; JavaScript requests that same owned, same-origin SVG once to enable interaction. If enhancement fails, the static map and county list remain available.
What the map does not claim
Regulation tracking and the Almic Send integration are under development. The current Texas draft register supports source review. The footprint map does not show nationwide regulatory ingestion, automated compliance decisions, verified compliance coverage, or nationwide legal research.
